Buvana is an Indian vocalist who specializes in bhajans - simple devotional songs derived from ancient Hindu tradition, and mantras. With SONGS OF LIGHT, her debut album for Oreade Music, Buvana presents a collection of sacred songs inspired and/or derived from ancient Hindi texts. Musically, the album has a clear Indian sound to it, with tabla beats, sitar, harmonium and bansuri flute standing out. Dig a little deeper and you'll notice a wealth of Western influences as well in the form of cello, harp, percussion and keyboards. Buvana's singing is sensual and melodic - she has a sweet, pure sound that is a little reminiscent to Snatam Kaur. Backing her is a chorus of singers performing in a call and response manner.

Buvana’s debut album showcases her pure vocals enveloped in rich instrumental performances. The serenity evoked by these sacred songs supports deep spiritual inquiry and numerous spiritual paths. Buvana is a devotee of Sri Mata Amritananda Mayi and a student of famous musician Sandip Bhattacharya. Her choice of these sacred mantras and bhajans allows the listener a rare experience of Divine Love. This CD benefits from the expertise of Surajit Das and Sandip Bhattacharya, both highly respected classically trained Indian musicians.
