Joy lies at the heart of sacred chant - joy of being in the presence of the divine, inner joy and the simple pleasure that comes with promoting peace in the world. Given that, its fitting that Guruganesha Singh would make the topic central on this album of intimate kirtan chant. The album has a close-knit appeal, as if you were sitting amongst the musicians in a private chant session in someone's living room. The instrumentation is mostly acoustic, including guitar blended with sitar, flute, tabla playing from Girish and Manish Vyas, esraj, violin and Thomas Barquee's keyboard work (he also produced the album). GuruGanesha's gentle voice is the guiding light on the album, his lead singing often intertwined with the pure, melodious voice of Snatam Kaur in both a duet and call/response fashion. |
Compelling duets and kirtan call-response between guruganesha Singh and Snatam Kaur, whose unforgettable voices create a counterpoint of masculine and feminine, strength and sweetness, earth and ether. • GuruGanesha’s signature guitar work enters new, jazz-influenced realms in a sparkling conversation with a diverse ensemble of classical Indian instruments including sitar, sarod, esraj, flute, and Indian violin.
